Internal medicine is the branch and specialty of medicine concerning the prevention, diagnosis and nonsurgical treatment of diseases, especially of internal organs. Internal medicine addresses to adults.

Internal medicine specialists (also called "internists") have the competence of solving complex diagnostic problems and monitoring severe cronical diseases and polipathology conditions. Internal medicine specialists diagnose adults with different disorders : respiratory diseases, heart diseases, digestive diseases, renal diseases, and bone and joints diseases.

Internal medicine also contributes to the preventive medicine by disease prevention and health promotion services.
