Hematology
Hematology is the branch of medicine that deals with the study, diagnostic and treatment of diseases of blood and blood-forming organs (bone marrow, spleen, liver, and lymph nodes).
Blood is a specialized tissue as a fluid, which, through circulatory system composed of heart
and blood vessels, carries nutritional substances and oxygen to the body tissues and carries carbon
dioxide and waste product of metabolism produced by cells, from the tissues to the elimination organs.
Blood is composed of blood specific cells suspended in a liquid called blood plasma.
Hematopoiesis is the process of formation and renewal of blood cellular components. Red bone marrow
(hematopoietic bone marrow) represents the major hematopoietic organ. In liver and spleen there are a
small amount of hepatopoietic cells, witch, in certain conditions (diseases) can become active -
extramarrow hematopoiesis.
Hematopoiesis is a self-sustained process witch continues along the life time. All of the cellular
components of the blood are derived from haematopoietic stem cells. The mechanisms regulating
hematopoietic process are multiples and complex.
