  • About project :
    • Ageing is associated with dysregulations in immune responsiveness, which imply an increased risk to infections, a decreased response to vaccinations and an increased incidence in autoimmune diseases. (Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, Sep/Oct 2004). Conventional approaches in medicine focus on the diagnostic and treatment of existing diseases; providing preventive strategies is a priority inside the discoveries in immunology, vaccines industries and molecular biology. The identification of immunosenescence mechanisms can lead to new preventive strategies: new vaccines, immunomodulators and cytokines, nutrition an physical exercises, substitution hormonal therapy.
    • Testing and evaluation the benefit of specific immunisation against flu and pneumoccocus infection will be one of the preventive strategies provided, in order to reduce acute respiratory infections in the elderly. Evaluation the benefit of an original nutraceutical compound, with immunomodulatory functions, on the immune system and on the responsiveness to the flu and pneumoccocus vaccination in the elderly will be the second preventive strategy tested in this project. The identification of some immunogenetics markers correlated with the susceptibility to respiratory infections and recommendations for new preventive strategies with the purpose to reduce such kind of infections will benefit the individual and the society.
